In honour of Emeritus Professor Kerry Anne Landman FAA, ANZIAM has instituted an award to recognise outstanding contributions of our members to the field of industrial mathematics. ANZIAM recognises industrial mathematics as a diverse discipline, with the fundamental definition being the use of mathematical and computational techniques to solve complex problems for industry (including government and non-profit sectors). At most one award will be made annually, but only to a candidate of sufficient merit. No person can receive more than one such award.
Selection criteria for the award are:
- The researcher must have carried out distinguished research, relative to opportunity, in industrial mathematics, where a significant proportion of the research has been carried out in Australia or New Zealand;
- The researcher must have been a member of ANZIAM for at least the three calendar years preceding the year in which the award is made. Active membership must be demonstrated within that three year-period.

Citation for Assoc Prof Roslyn Hickson

Associate Professor Roslyn Hickson is an applied mathematician whose work exemplifies the spirit of industrial mathematics through its impact on public health policy and practice. As Science Leader for Emerging Infectious Diseases at CSIRO and James Cook University, she develops mathematical and computational models to support decision-making on emerging, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, with a strong One Health and biosecurity focus. Her research spans tuberculosis control, dengue and Wolbachia interventions, pandemic and seasonal influenza, malaria elimination in the Asia–Pacific, and quantitative frameworks for viral spillover risk, producing widely cited contributions and tools now used by governments and international partners.
Dr Hickson’s career showcases the application of sophisticated mathematical modelling to complex real-world problems for government and health-sector industry, including work that helped the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control recognise the value of in-house modelling capacity. She has held research positions at the Australian National University, the University of Newcastle, IBM Research Australia, and the University of Melbourne’s Centre of Research Excellence in Malaria Elimination, and has been recognised with honours such as the Ria de Groot prize for best female postgraduate student, finalist selection for MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Asia Innovators Under 35 list, a Victorian Young Tall Poppy Science Award, and the ITS Australia Award for Excellence in Research and Development. Through her leadership, mentoring, and service to the mathematical sciences community, Roslyn Hickson has made outstanding and sustained contributions to industrial mathematics, richly deserving recognition as the recipient of the inaugural 2026 K. A. Landman Medal for Contributions to Industrial Mathematics.
Call for nominations for the 2027 KA Landman Medal
Nominations for the medal can be made by any member of ANZIAM other than the nominee or members of the Selection committee. A nomination document should consist of three parts in the following order:
(i) a statement detailing the impact that any career interruptions have had on the candidate’s opportunity to carry out research;
(ii) a brief CV of the nominee summarising their contributions, including the nominee’s list of publications and reports;
(iii) a resumé explaining the industrial impact and context of the nominee’s work.
Each of parts (i) and (iii) should be no more than one-page in length.
Nominations should be sent to the ANZIAM Secretary <anziam.secretary@gmail.com> by Friday 16 October.
